Blizzard Beach ? A Fun Orlando Water Park

What would you think if you saw snow in Orlando, Florida? It doesn’t sound very likely does it?

And yet that is exactly what you will see when you walk into Blizzard Beach. The words ‘blizzard’ and ‘beach’ were never really meant to go together. But Disney has combined them both to great effect and created a water park like no other.

Many guests think they have stumbled into a ski resort when they arrive in the park for the first time. But when you realise the mountain that forms the centrepiece of this park is known as Mount Gushmore instead of Mount Rushmore, you will have a good idea of what to expect next.

The whole park has a snowy theme that carries through all the rides and delights you can take part in. For example a chair lift has been installed to carry you to the top of Mount Gushmore. Once you reach the top you can decide which of the many rides you want to try first.

And there are plenty of them too. For example if you are visiting with someone else you should both try the Downhill Double Dipper. This consists of two water slides situated next to each other, so you can both start down to the bottom at the same time and see who gets there first!

If you have the nerve you can make your way back to the top to try the Summit Plummet instead. This is steep and you will need to lie down and cross your legs to give it a try. It’s fast and goes straight down with no twisting or turning, making it the quickest way you can get to the bottom of the mountain of all the rides there are.

Teamboat Springs is good too, offering you a slightly more sedate ride that still packs in the thrills. For this one you can pack in more people, as each raft can take up to six people at a time. As you can see it is designed for the whole family to enjoy. You will slide down the course, splashing through waterfalls and negotiating bends as you go. And after more than a thousand feet you will finally splash down to the bottom – ready to try it all again.

It might take a while to get used to the fact you’ll be wearing a swimming costume or trunks while wandering round a park designed to look like it is covered in snow. But once you get into the spirit of things you’ll love it. Just book one of the Orlando hotels close by so you won’t have a long journey to arrive at the park – or to make it home again afterwards, It’s certainly a fun but tiring day out.
